Not getting enough sleep is fast becoming a common problem among people who lead fast, busy lives. Sleeplessness is also a typical condition among the elderly.  However, being young is no guarantee that one would be free from the suffering brought about by sleeping disorders.

Almost all people have experience occasional sleepless nights. But not too many people realize the seriousness of not getting enough quality sleep. Based on research, as many as 25% of Americans report occasional sleeping problems.

The latest surveys indicate that insomnia is already a chronic problem for at 10% of the entire U.S. population. The cumulative impact of sleeplessness on a population has a bearing on personal health as well as productivity in the workplace. Lack of restful sleep impairs the person’s ability to carry out daily tasks and responsibilities.  Aside from feeling tired, people who lack sleep have trouble concentrating and tend to get very irritable.  Imagine having those feelings or low level of physical strength while driving on a busy highway or being in the middle of an important business meeting.  The results could be outright disastrous for one’s career or even life-threatening. Conversely, people who get enough continuous and quality sleep are more able to perform at work or in other activities the following day.

But how much sleep do we really need?

Sleep requirements vary over the life cycle. Newborns and infants need a lot of sleep and require several periods of sleep throughout a 24-hour time period. Naps are important to them as well as to toddlers who may have need for naps up to the age of 5. As children enter adolescence, their sleep patterns shift to a later sleep-wake cycle, but they still need around 9 hours of sleep. Throughout adulthood, even as a person gets older, they still need 7-9 hours of sleep. Sleep patterns may change, but the need for sleep remains the same. Most adults do best with about 8 hours of sleep each night until age 60, after which 6 hours may be adequate. Even though the elderly need less sleep, almost one half of people over 60 experience some degree of insomnia.

Insomnia is not a disorder, it is a symptom and not a stand-alone diagnosis. In simple terms, insomnia is  difficulty in initiating or maintaining sleep, or both. It is a term that is used to indicate any and all stages and types of sleep loss.

Although most of us know what insomnia is all about, very few people actually get to seek medical advice and treatment. Many people are actually unaware of the behavioral and medical options available for treating insomnia.

However, there are various medications that supposedly effective for dealing with insomnia. Over-the-counter sleeping pills and long-acting or high-dose sedatives can be purchased easily, but it may make the problem worse. Many of these sleeping aids contain antihistamines as the main ingredient. Antihistamines are known to cause sluggishness and, if used for long periods, could possibly cause memory impairment.

Strong, prescription sedatives do not produce a natural, restful sleep. If used for extensive periods, a patient may even develop tolerance or dependence on these drugs. However, suddenly stopping the use of the medication may cause rebound insomnia and withdrawal. If insomnia has been interfering with one’s daily routine or quality of life for a month or longer, it is already time to see a doctor to determine what might be the cause of the sleep problem and how it might be treated.

So, I have your interest and you want to know more about RGP contact lenses. Well good, you are now on the right track to learn more about the cutting edge technology of this corrective eye wear. Gas permeable (GP) which are also known as (RGP) rigid gas permeable and oxygen permeable lenses are literally light years ahead of the old hard contact lenses. When you get right down to the bottom line truth about RGP contact lenses, you are getting down to some really serious medicine for people with vision difficulties. Let’s first talk about the old style hard contact lenses. Remember those! These contacts originally came out in 1945, and were made with a material known as polymethyl-methacrylate (PMMA), boy that was a mouthful. Now as I was saying, PMMA which is an emorphous thermoplastic with good optical qualities was used in just about all contact lenses prior to the soft lenses hitting the market in the 1970’s. Which unfortunately for contact lense wearers back then was very uncomfortable and very difficult to get used to if you could. But not only that! PMMA lenses was just not healthy for your eyes because they did not allow oxygen to pass through. Now this is one of the main reason’s scientists invented soft lenses and looked into the future about RGP contact lenses. Ok, out with the old and in with the new. Let’s talk about RGP contact lenses now. Gas permeable lenses first came out in the 1980’s. Now instead of PMMA, RGPs were made from silicone, which is more flexible than PMMA and more importantly they also allow oxygen to pass through the lenses to the eye. This is vitally important for healthy eyes. Now keep this in mind also, RGP contact lenses even allow more oxygen to get through to the eye than many soft contact lenses. So the bottom line is, not only are RGP contact lenses more comfortable to wear but they are healthier for your eyes. This makes your eyes happy on all counts. Now if that wasn’t enough here is another benefit of RGP contact lenses that doctors and contact lense wearers are excited about and that is RGP contact lenses are more durable and resistant to protein deposits than soft lenses. Plus, they can actually help you see better. You’ll also find that they are easier to clean, cheaper to buy, and last longer. But…there always has to be a but somewhere doesn’t there… Still as beneficial as RGP contact lenses are, they are still not for everyone. They are best for people who have trouble getting great results from regular soft lenses. These could include people who are just very picky when it comes to their vision. Or for people whose eyes have certain disorders that makes vision correction more difficult. This includes sufferers of astigmatism, who often find soft contacts lacking when it comes to vision correction.

There are different types of amnesia but each involves memory loss. When someone has had a painful past experience part of the post traumatic consequences often include amnesia.  Amnesia can also be induced by drugs or caused by physical trauma or disease to the brain. So how does amnesia – a seemingly undesirable state of being – fit into the process of hypnosis?

There are different schools of thought on whether or not inducing amnesia should be a part of hypnotherapy.  Hypnosis techniques, which rely heavily on the power of suggestion as a way to encourage new behaviors or break old habits, seldom use amnesia as part of the therapy.  The use of amnesia in hypnosis does actually rely on suggestive powers. In this case the suggestion is that the person undergoing hypnosis forgets – at least temporarily.

The human mind is naturally quite forgetful.  We get millions of different messages each day, yet only remember what we consciously choose to remember.  A good example of the truthfulness of this has been the subject of many experiments in how observant people generally are.  In these experiments a person enters a room and causes a disruption drawing attention to himself.  When all of the people in the room are asked to describe the person the results are widely varied, even though the people observed him for a few minutes.  Hypnosis relies on the mind’s ability to quickly forget that which it doesn’t even know it has experienced.

In a typical hypnosis session one of the final steps is referred to as the amnesia phase.  It is designed to scramble the memory. Lasting only a mere minute, it helps the person undergoing hypnosis to avoid over analyzing the suggestions or scripts introduced to them during the session.   The amnesia induced during hypnosis is short-lived. The purpose of this is that the information obtained during hypnosis is something you want to remember – subconsciously at first, and then eventually as part of conscious decision making. The reason for forgetting temporarily is to avoid that immediate analysis.  Post hypnotic amnesia is also sometimes referred to as function amnesia because of this fact.

While the brain is naturally forgetful to some degree, it is also naturally analytical.  When too much analysis occurs too soon following hypnosis, it can be mentally stressful to the person who just when through the hypnosis. This can negatively affect the impact of the script and the ability to make the desired changes.

Allowing yourself to be hypnotized also involves a willingness to forget.  To prepare for hypnosis make sure you:

1. Have an open mind

2. Are willing to listen to the suggestive powers

3. Come prepared to relax completely

4. Understand you may not immediately remember all that was said during a session, but that the message you need has been delivered

5. Avoid trying to remember and analyze all that you’ve heard

Understanding that amnesia is an important and effective part of the whole process of hypnosis will help you get more from each session.  Come prepared with an open mind and enjoy the experience. You don’t have to remember it all for it to make real changes in your life.

Gambling addiction is a major concern around the world, as more and more people are embracing the tables and cards as a means of stress relief. The emergence of online casinos has not helped curb the growing statistics of people becoming addicted to gambling. The availability of casino games and the allure of the easy money has the potential to rapidly go from stress relief to full-blown addiction. There are some that would argue that people with pathological gambling disorder are merely exceptionally greedy. Others, though, would argue that these people are suffering from a mental health disorder and need to be taken away from the tables and put into counseling as soon as possible. Currently, there appear to be no signs of either side achieving any sort of common ground or consensus. So while the debate rages on, people continue to become addicted to roulette, blackjack, and the slots. Pathological gambling is basically differentiated from the norm by one simple factor. Addicts are in such an ill state of mental health that they are either incapable of seeing their problem or are simply ignoring the consequences of their actions. This can include everything from how much damage their next week-long session at the roulette table is going to cost them, to ignoring the threat of a spouse divorcing them if they don’t stop. The problem has gotten to the point where the thrill of the “action” has taken control of the person’s mind. There are some mental health experts that argue that gambling addicts are no longer in full control of their actions. While there is some evidence provided by the increase of certain chemicals in the nervous system during gambling, this is not considered adequate proof. To some degree, another sign of pathological gambling comes in the form of separation anxiety. The addiction tends to get to a point where the addict cannot stop thinking about gambling. Scenarios are played out in the mind constantly, bordering on delusions. This preoccupation, when combined with the possibility of being withdrawn from a casino, can sometimes lead to separation anxiety. In some cases, the person exhibits symptoms similar to drug withdrawal if they are deprived of their gambling “fix.” If data taken from counseling sessions with gambling addicts is to be considered, it is arguable than addicts also develop a tolerance for gambling. According to studies, the person’s mental health adapts to the amounts being gambled such that the addict needs to bet more and more. This is similar to what happens to drug addicts and alcoholics. As the mind develops a tolerance for the regular amounts that the person bets, the mind develops a need to increase the bet spread to attain that same sense of euphoria. According to some reports, a person’s mental health and finances can be put under serious strain if this behavior is left untreated for an extended period. Arguably, a person may also develop a mild form of antisocial personality disorder if the gambling problem is left untreated. This occurs when the addiction has gotten to the point where the person has become desperate to cover up losses incurred through gambling. The person’s mental health can warp into a state where the typical consideration for social norms and rules is discarded in favor of alleviating the person’s perceived problems. While taking loans or money from relatives is the common means of doing this, there are some cases where it gets to the point where illegal activity is the only means of supporting the addiction.

How many weight-watchers use 20+ TABLESPOONS of sugar in their coffee or tea? I guess the answer to that is zero. Why? Because all weight-watchers know that sugar has a high calorific value and is therefore detrimental to weight loss. Also using that amount of sugar will create liver problems eventually. So my question is: ‘If high levels of sugar are bad for us, and we all seem to know that is true, why do we drink soda that contains 20+ TABLESPOONS of sugar in each can?’ It is hard to assess how many people ruin their weight control program by drinking soda (carbonated water, fizzy drinks or soft drinks, depending upon which country you live in, are all forms of what I refer to as soda), judging by the sales of these drinks I guess the answer is most weight-watchers fall into this trap. A young man that I know was heading down the road to obesity in his early twenties and being an accountant he was aware that his job didn’t include physical exercise that help burn off calories. Like most twenty something people he didn’t like the idea of going on a diet so he decided to cut soda and fast foods from his diet. Result, in less than six-months he was 26 pounds lighter, feeling healthier and looking trim. That was eleven years ago and he still remains trim today, he eats well but adamantly refuses to go back to fast foods or soda. It doesn’t matter what brand of soda you drink, or whether it is labeled “light” or “diet” they all contain massive amounts of sugar and are unhealthy. Finally we should not leave this article without taking a look at hyper-activity in children. There is little doubt that high sugar dosage is often the cause of children becoming hyperactive, it also leads the behavioral problems. Consequently it is advisable to take a long, hard, look at what your child’s sugar intake is particularly including soda. The healthiest drink is water; it will also quench your thirst better and for longer than soda, and it is also rated at zero calories, which should make it the weight-watchers drink of choice. For your children you may find it beneficial to make them smoothies using fresh fruit as an alternative to soda. This article is copyright © David McCarthy 2006. “Across the board in males and females, the trend nowadays is for people to be less hairy. I am not saying that people are going bald by the day. It is just that head is not the only place where you would have hair. As it turns out, parts of body like the legs and arms are the most popular amongst people who are very conscious about. So, who does the Waxing? These are trained skin specialists who do waxing for people. Basically, the objective of these skin specialists is to remove hair from parts of body that individuals do not desire. These people have a lot of experience in doing waxing. It is highly recommended for you to visit parlors where the employees of the parlor have a high degree of experience and knowledge; otherwise you might end up with ingrown hair or a possible infection. How is waxing done? Firstly, do not even consider trying these techniques at home just to save some money. In doing so, you could do damage to your skin. That is obviously not something that you would want out of a waxing. Secondly, removing hair can be primarily done by two techniques – 1) Using a Razor 2) Using a wax. Basically, by using a razor the hair is just shaved off completely. A lot of people use twin and electric razors for this purpose, which results in thicker hair growth. The other technique involves application of the wax on the part from where hair needs to be removed. A special wax is applied on the area which the hair needs to be removed and pulled off but a specials waxing strip. Why not do waxing on your own? Please note that Waxing is a highly skilled practice. You are advised not to try this at your home at any time. Doing so will hold you responsible for any damage that is caused to your skin. As been observed in many cases, some of these damages are irreversible by nature. Its not a matter of applying wax and pulling it off, there are many aspects, for example what direction you apply the wax, and how you remove the wax. These all play a key roll to removing the hair properly. There are many locations in Toronto that offer Waxing Services to individuals. Most parlors have qualified employees who will remove the hair from a part of your body. The intentions are clear – perform the waxing with as little irritation as possible to the client.”
