Depending on their age, children can have a habit of putting things up their noses, which may become lodged and lead to bad breath.  It’s not unusual for children to poke small objects into their mouths and noses.  If there is a suspicion of this, it is probably best to allow a doctor to probe and remove the foreign object.  There may be an indicator of this activity if there is a discharge from the nose.  It’s also been reported that small swallowed objects can become lodged in the passages and cause bad breath.

The habit of oral hygiene needs to be instilled in children while they are growing up.  It’s fairly well established that children are not necessarily fastidious in keeping their teeth and mouths clean, and the presence of old food may provide a good breeding ground for the bacteria that cause decomposition and smelly breath.  Children should always be encouraged and taught to maintain the highest standards of oral hygiene, as this is a habit that they will carry with them through their lives.

- While you’re brushing your teeth, brush also the roof of your mouth and your tongue, using regular toothpaste, as this will help to clean adverse compounds.

- You should also floss between the teeth at least once a day, to dislodge any entrapped particles.

What you eat can cause troubles for various reasons.

- Eat a low-fat diet rich in fruits and vegetables.

- Avoid too much meat and protein, as the protein is fuel for the bacteria which cause bad breath.

- Avoid particular smelly foods, such as garlic and onions.  When these get to the stomach, the smell transfers to the bloodstream, and the air you breath out picks up the smell from the lungs.

Visit your dentist to discuss the matter.  Bad breath may be caused by dental problems, including gum disease (periodontal disease), and your dentist will be able to advise, and may save you more pain and expense in the long run.  You should visit your dentist regularly, at least once every six months, for a regular checkup and cleaning.  This will dig out the stubborn food particles that your brushing and flossing have missed.

You can use a mouthwash for temporary relief of the bad breath smell.  Be aware, however, that many mouthwashes have alcohol content, which is detrimental.  If you seek temporary relief by sucking a breath mint, like Altoids, you should also note that the high sugar content is a disadvantage.

The principal bad breath cause is associated with bacteria in the mouth.  This can flourish when the saliva flow in the mouth is reduced.  Lack of saliva means that old food is not washed away, and saliva also helps in neutralizing acids.  Saliva also performs the very necessary task of flushing out the mouth, and removing food particles, so any reduction in saliva flow inhibits this action.

Saliva can be reduced for a number of reasons.  There are natural causes of this reduction, and other causes related to disease or choices.  The flow of saliva reduces naturally as we get older, making us more prone to bad breath.  Also when we are dehydrated, the moisture in the mouth reduces naturally.  Often when asleep, people will have their mouths open, maybe even snoring, and this will dry out the mouth.  This contributes to the “morning breath” syndrome.

Certain diseases and illnesses can similarly contribute to bad breath.  Any infection that affects the respiratory tract can be a cause of bad breath, as well as many other diseases.

Dry mouth can also be caused by medications for various problems.  The most common is probably the antihistamine, taken to relieve allergies.  Some others include high blood pressure and depression medicines.  Other things that can be ingested that affect the dryness of the mouth include alcohol and mouthwashes that contain alcohol.

One of the many problems associated with cigarette smoking is dry mouth.  For many reasons unrelated to bad breath, it is wise to avoid smoking, as has been documented extensively elsewhere.  With a predisposition to bad breath, however, the habit of smoking virtually guarantees that you will suffer from bad breath.

It is no good to think that the bacteria causing bad breath may be generally eliminated, as they are naturally occurring and required for bodily function.  They are anaerobic, which means “without oxygen”.  As saliva provides oxygen the lack of saliva with a dry mouth makes a more favorable environment for the bacteria to increase, aggravating the bad breath.

The bacteria create sulfurous compounds, such as hydrogen sulfide (the bad egg smell) which are the cause of the smelly breath.  The bacteria assist in the digestive process by starting the breakdown of proteins.  Thus another cause of bad breath would be a high protein diet, which feeds the bacteria.

A dental abscess may then appear causing you to suffer great pain and bad breath due to the tooth being surrounded by a smelly pus bag.

Pus appears because the body starts producing antibodies to fight the infection. Bacteria will spread infection in the tissue surrounding the tooth and consequently spread an annoying bad smell in your mouth.

Your breath will become unbearable because the gums affected can deviate from the tooth and the space between them can collect particles of the food that you eat which can later form bacteria. A dental abscess can also seriously affect the bone tissue surrounding the teeth.

Some of the symptoms to look out for are throbbing toothaches, especially during eating, red or swollen gums, fever or a bad taste in your mouth. You may also notice a tooth color change to grey or pink.

A bulge on the gum near the tooth can form and a considerable amount of yellow pus or blood may ooze from the red, bulging zone.

As the infection spreads the ache may decrease and this is the effect of bone tissue dissolution. When losing this tissue the tooth is poorly fixed and may be dislodged. A medical exam is mandatory in this situation.

A dentist may inspect the oral cavity to identify the swollen gums or other infection signs that suggest a dental abscess. A dental radiography may also be necessary.
